Excursions with Anime: Angel Beats (and brief rant on Infernal Devices manga)

I’ve never been much of an anime or manga fan, and for all I know, I’m probably pronouncing the words wrong every time I talk about it. But nonetheless, I’ve always appreciated the beauty of the characters and the artful approach that brings perfection to characters that just can’t be depicted well in actual human form. If that makes sense.

My first example of this would have to be the graphic novel version of the Infernal Devices. Now it may not be true manga, but I swoon every single time I see the characters, because they are drawn so beautifully. In my head, no celebrity or model can do justice to these characters, but these drawn manga figures sure as hell can. Just look at them!

and then in Chibi form!!

But enough about the Infernal Devices (who am I kidding, when will it ever be enough?), my actual intent was to talk about Anime! And the fun-filled adventures I’ve had with a super fun, super awesome show I’ve been watching.

Currently, I’m enthralled by the world of Anime, and I just want to rant a little about Angel Beats.

ANGEL BEATS

I’m currently watching this one and almost finished 😥 with it since it only has around 13 episodes. I heard they are making a video game kind of thing based on it though, and I can totally see that working, especially since the whole show is practically a game anyway.

Summary:  Angel Beats! takes place at a high school acting as a limbo for those who have died, where students learn to give up any lingering attachments they still have from life before passing on. The main character, Otinashi, joins the SSS  an organization a girl named Yuri founded and leads which fights against God for the negative experiences the SSS members went through in life.

What I like in a nutshell: Characters!! Jokes! (probably one of the funniest anime’s I’ve seen) High School depiction on point! The characters are so funny and I especially love that the female lead characters are so powerful and level-headed, because often anime depicts the girls as either very naive or just plain annoying. Let me also just say that this show has made me laugh so hard that my sister gives me very strange looks all the time for it. They are so funny! (for those of you that may know what I’m talking about: I especially love the episode when they try to make distractions in the classroom: Hinata was amazing in that one.)

(cred to candyapplekiss @deviant art)

What I didn’t like: Don’t get me wrong I still love the show, the only thing I thought was kind of funky is the reasons that they fight. Now it probably makes sense if you don’t think about it too much, but I was personally very confused as to what the whole point of the SSS and their rival with Tenshi was. But the confusion didn’t take too much away from the plot, I kind of just went with the flow and all was well. 🙂

What I wish: Hinata and Otinashi!! I ship them a lot, and for those of you who don’t know they are the red head and blue-haired dudes in the front.

I LOVE THEM YOU CAN’T MISS THE CHEMISTRY ❤ ❤

Okay, I’ll leave it at that. Check out the show if you have not seen it before!! I highly recommend it. Anddd if they make a game, I heard you get to be Otinashi and thus can make him do whatever you want.. as in fall in love with Hinata please?

Any Anime recommendations out there?

      • Wow nice!! You’ve seen so many and I can’t wait to see them! And I’ve seen Vampire Knight and I just might write a rant on that one too sometime. Vampire Knight is so good!! and Zero was my perfect physical embodiment of what Jem should look like 😛 Also, I’ve heard Clannad was good, have you seen that?

      • Nope I didn’t but I’ve heard it’s good. Fushigi Yuugi was the first anime that made me interested in the anime’s so you should definitely watch it even though it’s old.

  1. Oh gosh, I could feel your feels radiating from this post, Vivian! 😉 Angel Beats was the last anime I watched (about a year ago) and omg, it made me cry. Everyone’s death stories were just terribly sad… And I was going to give you a list of my recommendations in this comment but I decided to give you this link to a post I did. Happy reading, blogging, and anime watching! 🙂

      • Thanks for the recommendations! I’ve definitely heard of some of them, such as Skip Beat and Sailor Moon. I’ve also seen Vampire Knight and it absolutely killed me; I loved it so much!! I’ll have to check out the other ones soon! ❤

      • You’re so welcome! 🙂 Sailor Moon isn’t an urgent anime you should catch up on. Just because it’s targeted from a younger audience and there’s hundreds of episodes. I liked it more growing up… but it’s still special so that’s why I included it on my list. BUT you MUST watch Skip Beat and Nana. Both are wonderful and my absolute favorites. They also both have manga that are just omgomgomg/extreme feels. And if you decide you like the shouju genre and romance, give a Kaichou wa Maid-sama a go as well. 🙂

      • Haha I do like romance… I tried watching Death Note and it lacked romance and like..happiness, making it kind of hard to get through, so I’ll probably try one of those you mentioned first.
